Neurosurgical solutions for patients with spinal cord injuries

We bring back motor and sensory functions to patients with spinal cord injuries by engaging advanced tissue engineering and neurosurgery solutions.

Meet Astroglial Innovations

Astroglial Innovations is a special purpose medical business entity offering therapeutic solution for reconstruction of completely severed spinal cord based on advanced tissue engineering product Gliomatrix™.

We are dedicated to translate scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for patients, striving to improve or restore motor and sensory functions, reduce pain, and enhance the overall condition and quality of life for those in need.

Our flagship technology, the process of cell preparation for transplantation and the spinal cord reconstruction surgery was developed by a team led by prof. Pawel Tabakow and dr. Wojciech Fortuna, in cooperation with Neurorepair Unit of the Institute of Neurology, UCL, led first by prof. Geoffrey Raisman, and recently by prof. Ying Li. This team has spent the last 20 years refining the neurosurgical and biotechnological aspects of the method. We have already successfully performed spinal reconstruction surgery showing significant improvement in sensation, voluntary movements and control over excretory and sexual functions in the treated patient.

Astroglial Innovations’ team plans to develop the therapeutic solution in the form of ATMP-HE under Polish legislation and later on as a registered ATMP product in the central procedure at EMA. AGI intends to offer this therapeutic ATMP-HE method commercially, continuing the cooperation with the current cell processing facility, and ultimately carrying out up to a dozen therapeutic procedures a year.

Dariusz Fidyka’s story

Polish surgeons and researchers led by prof. Tabakow and dr Fortuna at Wroclaw Medical University and Hospital, in collaboration with British scientists based at UCL’s Institute of Neurology used a pioneering technique, based on research by Geoffrey Raisman to help Dariusz Fidyka – a patient with completely severed spinal cord.

Cells from Mr Fidyka’s own olfactory bulb were transplanted into his spinal cord. Additionally, the spinal cord was reconstructed with grafts of autologous peripheral nerves. As a result of the procedure, Dariusz Fidyka – a firefighter suffering paralysis due to spine-damaging knife–attack became the first person in history to verifiably recover sensory and motor functions after the complete severing of his spinal cord. Prior to this, Dariusz Fidyka had had no feeling in his lower body and remained unable to walk. Three months after the treatment, he began to regain strength in his thigh muscles, and he was beginning to walk again within six months.

Dariusz Fidyka also featured in the BBC Panorama episode “To Walk Again”. See the video below.
